Spring has arrived, the snow on the highest peaks is starting to melt, and many mid-mountain locations are turning into perfect places for a bit of trekking or a simple walk, soaking in the early warmth and the colors of nature.

Lake Iseo, with its many moderately high mountains, mid-slope trails, and countless paths and roads connecting the villages, becomes a special place to walk and truly enjoy the experience.

In this extensive list of hikes and treks, you’ll find the best local excursions: from an easy lakeside walk to more challenging hikes that lead to stunning viewpoints. Just keep in mind to avoid high-altitude spots or those too exposed to the north, where you might still encounter snow and ice on the trail.

The hikes suggested here are, of course, suitable for other times of the year as well, but spring is by far the perfect moment to tackle them: the weather is mild, not yet too hot, and nature is at its finest, with blooming flowers and stunning colors.

A timeless classic on Lake Iseo is undoubtedly the Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve. It’s a simple and evocative hike through a unique natural setting, featuring long wooden boardwalks suspended over water, hides perfect for observing local wildlife, green meadows dotted with flowers, and an atmosphere of absolute peace.

The route is suitable for everyone, with no difficulties, and thanks to the many available paths, it can easily be customized to suit your preferences. There are two main entry points to access the reserve:

  • Entrance 1: along Via Per Rovato, near the sports field → 📍 Location

Entry to the reserve requires a €2 ticket, and it’s always advisable to check for any temporary restrictions. Once inside, you can freely choose your direction, following one of the three main trails: North, South, and Central.

  • The North and South trails, when combined, allow for a full loop around the reserve.
  • The Central trail is the most spectacular, developing entirely on wooden walkways and narrow strips of land surrounded by water.

As it is a protected area, some sections may be temporarily closed to allow birds to nest in complete tranquility.

Ciclopedonale Vello Toline – Camminando tra roccia e lago

A spectacular cycle and pedestrian path winds along the eastern shore of Lake Iseo, right in one of its most rocky and rugged stretches. Here, towering rock formations plunge dramatically into the lake, while resilient vegetation clings to the bare rock. The view offers a breathtaking panorama of the Bergamo side, dominated by the striking Baia del Bogn.

The trail, divided between cyclists and pedestrians, begins just past the last parking spots in the small village of Vello (note: parking can be hard to find). From there, a road carved into the rock, with small tunnels dug into the mountainside, starts running along the lake heading north.

Escursioni lago d’iseo in primavera - Ciclopedonale Vello-Toline

Along the way, there are not many picnic areas or equipped beaches for swimming. Also, diving into deep water without a gradual entry point can be dangerous. If your goal is to take a swim, it's best to head to the designated areas in Vello or Toline, located at the start and end of the route. While walking this path, the best thing to do is to simply take in the wild beauty of the lake and surrounding nature.

The route is accessible year-round, but it’s during spring and summer that the landscape’s colors truly shine.

Via Valeriana – Cammino in primavera sul Lago d’Iseo

Between Brescia, Lake Iseo, and Valle Camonica runs an ancient route nearly 190 km long, divided into 12 stages. This trail follows the path of old Roman roads, allowing you to explore the entire eastern shore of Lake Iseo and then climb up into the Valle Camonica, all the way to the Tonale Pass.

If you plan to stay in the lake area, the best option is to start from stage 3, which connects Pisogne to Pilzone. This section of the trail runs midway up the slope, offering wonderful views of the lake and passing through charming villages and hamlets. The path alternates between asphalted roads, mule tracks, and brief stretches of true hiking trail immersed in nature.

A great advantage of this walk is the presence of the railway, with several stations along Lake Iseo. Thanks to the train, you can complete a full section and then easily return. Alternatively, you’re free to hike just a part of it, or even divert from the marked path to explore the picturesque towns overlooking the lake.

In fact, all the villages along the eastern shore are connected to the Via Valeriana. So, if you’re planning to visit multiple locations and enjoy the journey on foot, why not do it by following this ancient route?

Torrente Borlezza – Una lungo discesa, dalla montagna alle sponde del Lago d’Iseo

When the last snow melts, the gentle summit of Monte Pora becomes a perfect area for hikers, thanks to its many trails. The route I’m sharing here is a two-day itinerary, starting from Monte Pora (Colle Vareno) and following the entire course of the Borlezza stream, offering a journey through wild landscapes and charming villages.

The path crosses Castione della Presolana, the beautiful Valle di Tede, and continues into the Valle Seriana, passing through several traditional villages. In spring, one of the most scenic sections is the stretch linking Songavazzo, Cerete Alto, and Cerete Basso, where you’ll walk past ancient mills and fairy-tale-like scenery.

The hike then continues to Sovere, where you can visit the extraordinary Fossil Forest, and finally reaches Castro, right where the stream carved an ancient gorge, creating a truly unique landscape.

The entire route is not particularly technical, but it does require several hours of walking. Of course, you're free to tackle just a section of it, adapting the experience to your own pace and preferences.

Monte Isola – Trekking ad anello sull’isola del Lago d’Iseo

A timeless classic, suitable for everyone, is the scenic loop trail around Monte Isola, which winds through the island’s various coastal villages, with detours to secluded beaches and quiet little parks. The route mostly follows pedestrian and bike-friendly paths that run parallel to the main road, with only a few short sections on dirt roads or trails. The elevation gain is minimal, and the entire hike takes less than 3 hours, making it truly accessible for anyone.

Along the way, you’ll likely be tempted to venture off the main trail to explore the historic centers of small towns, enjoy a lakeside snack, or simply relax on the grass at one of the many scenic little beaches.

In short, this is a relaxing walk, perfect for soaking up the spring atmosphere at your own pace, and easy to split into smaller stages so you can take your time discovering all the island’s most charming spots.

The last itinerary in this collection is probably the one I’ve hiked the most. Its simplicity, combined with the numerous scenic viewpoints along the way, makes it perfect for photography enthusiasts. This route leads to the cross of Provaglio d'Iseo and, later, to Balota del Coren, a small cross placed on a rocky spur near the village of Iseo.

The hike starts from one of the available parking areas in Provaglio d'Iseo. From here, follow the paved road of Via San Rocco, which leads to the homonymous chapel and the remains of an ancient castle. After this section, the trail becomes a cemented path that cuts through the woods, quickly reaching the Santuario della Madonna del Corno. This panoramic spot offers a wonderful view of the Po Valley and the Torbiere del Sebino.

Trekking Lago d'Iseo Primavera - Balota del Coren
Trekking Lago d’Iseo Primavera – Balota del Coren

Continuing along the trail, you will soon encounter the CAI 290 junction, which deviates to the right into the forest and leads to Balota del Coren. However, before following this path, I recommend continuing straight ahead for a short detour to visit the cross of Provaglio. The trail remains almost level, passing through a few farmhouses and hunting huts, and after a brief descent, it arrives at a small rocky clearing where the cross stands. From here, you get an exceptional view of the southern part of Lake Iseo and the Torbiere, whose water mirrors reflect the light, creating stunning color effects. This is a great spot to watch the sunset.

After returning the same way, you can finally take the CAI 290 trail, which climbs steadily through the woods. The vegetation soon thickens, hiding views of the lake and surrounding landscape. While the ascent doesn’t present technical difficulties, the constant elevation gain and some slightly slippery sections require a bit of attention. Once you reach a hunting hut, the path becomes easier and, after a wide left bend, it exits the woods to follow a narrow rocky spur. This section leads to the clearing where Balota del Coren is located. The panoramic view from here is breathtaking: you can admire Lake Iseo, the town of Iseo, and Monte Bronzone. The only regret is that from this position, the Torbiere are no longer fully visible. It’s also worth noting that in this section of the trail, there are no safety barriers or guardrails, so if you suffer from vertigo, it's better to avoid going all the way to the cross.

The return follows the same route as the outward journey, with no options for variations or circular routes.

Colmi di Polaveno – Passeggiando sulle morbide colline di Sulzano

Let’s return to a simple hike suitable for almost everyone. The Colmi di Polaveno form a scenic hilly area near Sulzano and Mont'Isola. Several trails intersect here, passing through forests, pastures, and ancient farmhouses, offering breathtaking views of Lake Iseo, Sulzano, and the Bergamasque Alps towering in the background.

The itinerary can be adjusted based on personal preferences, but an excellent starting point is the parking lot on Via Santa Maria del Giogo. From here, follow the uphill road to reach the area where the Trattoria I Colmi is located. Right next to the restaurant, take the CAI 255 trail, which immediately enters the forest. The trail passes through hunting areas and leads to a wonderful panoramic clearing. Although the meadows are mostly fenced and used for grazing, it’s still possible to enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Iseo without straying from the path.

Escursioni lago d’iseo in primavera - Colmi di Polaveno
Escursioni lago d’iseo in primavera – Colmi di Polaveno

After passing a farmhouse, the trail joins a mule track and continues with a slight uphill slope. The path runs next to some houses, goes around Monte Castellino, and with a final uphill stretch, reaches the wide meadow where the Church of Santa Maria del Giogo stands. Here, the view is somewhat obscured by vegetation, but it remains an ideal spot for a refreshing break. Those who wish to continue can go beyond the church to reach Trattoria Santa Maria, and then join the paved road of Via Santa Maria, where another parking lot is available.

For the return, you can retrace the same route. Alternatively, just after the church, take the CAI 310 trail, which descends more steeply through the woods and leads directly back to the parking lot, avoiding the detour to Trattoria I Colmi.

Croce di Sarnico e Forcella di Molere – Un giro ad anello con vista sopra Sarnico

Let’s continue with a loop trail that, although quite simple, offers truly breathtaking panoramic views. The route begins in Sarnico, starting from one of the many parking areas near the cemetery. From here, head towards Via Cerro Alto, until you reach the start of the trail, marked by several signs indicating the direction to Forcella di Molere.

From the very beginning, the trail is quite steep and immersed in a dense forest. However, as you gain altitude, the panorama opens up, offering beautiful views of Sarnico and the southern portion of Lake Iseo. One of the most captivating points of the trail is definitely the Cross of Sarnico, located on a rocky clearing from which you can enjoy a spectacular 360° view of the Oglio River, the lake, and the Torbiere del Sebino. This spot is perfect for watching the sunrise or sunset.

Continuing along the trail, it follows the ridge of the mountain behind the town, alternating between wooded sections and open viewpoints that offer truly picturesque glimpses of the lake. Once you reach the summit, the descent begins, which in some sections overlaps with an asphalt road. After about an hour of walking, you reach Forcella di Molere, where there is a B&B and where you can still enjoy a magnificent view of the lake.

The return journey follows a cobblestone road and a staircase, which quickly leads you back to the heart of the town, returning to the starting point. Although the route is located in the northern part of Sarnico, at the end of the hike, it only takes a short walk of about ten minutes to reach the center, where you can conclude the day with a pleasant stroll along the lakefront.

Piramidi di Zone – Passeggiando tra immense formazioni rocciose

A simple yet incredibly scenic route is the loop trail within the Piramidi di Zone Nature Reserve. This protected area, established in 1984, is home to curious rock formations that, over the course of millennia, have taken on a unique shape: columns of debris reaching up to 30 meters high, topped with large dark boulders that seem to be precariously balanced on their peaks. Observing these extraordinary natural structures while walking along a trail immersed in a dense forest is a fascinating experience, accessible to all.

The hike starts near the San Giorgio church, where there is a large free parking area. After passing a bar and a playground, you will quickly reach the start of the CAI 225 trail. The trail begins by crossing a few meadows and then enters the forest. After about ten minutes of walking, you reach a wooden fence, from which you can admire a large depression in the ground, inside which these bizarre geological formations stand. The best viewpoints are fenced off and equipped with benches, tables, and informative boards providing details about the place and the trail's layout.

As you continue, the path loses altitude quickly, alternating between wooded sections and panoramic points that allow you to see the pyramids in their entirety. Once you reach the lower boundary of the reserve, the trail becomes almost flat, following the depression in the ground and running along the spectacular rock formations. This section, which allows you to view the pyramids from below, is undoubtedly one of the most captivating parts of the entire route.

The final part of the hike involves a slight ascent until you meet the paved road leading to Zone. From here, the CAI 225 trail runs alongside the road, gradually recovering the lost altitude, until reaching the first houses of the village and returning to the starting parking area.

Corna Trentapassi – Uno dei migliori tramonti sul lago d’Iseo

Another classic hike with a spectacular view of Lake Iseo is the ascent to Corna Trentapassi, a rocky peak that, despite not featuring a particularly long or complex route, offers breathtaking panoramas. It’s one of the best spots to admire the sunset and take stunning photos.

The starting point is Zone, where it is recommended to park along via Aldo Moro, from where the trail signs to the summit are easily visible. The route initially follows the CAI 229 trail, which develops along a comfortable mule track immersed in the forest. After a few minutes of climbing through gentle hairpin turns and past some farmhouses, you will encounter a junction: the left path leads directly to the summit, while the right one ascends more gently via Forcella Trentapassi. The second option is generally recommended.

Continuing along the path, you will quickly reach the pass, where there is a small open area with some picnic tables. The dense vegetation limits the view, but by diverting a few steps onto the 205/209 trail, you will reach a treeless panoramic point, from where you can admire the northern section of the lake, the towns of Castro and Lovere, and the beginning of the Val Camonica.

lago d’Iseo primavera - Corna Trentapassi
lago d’Iseo primavera – Corna Trentapassi

From here, the trail continues along the CAI 205, which becomes a classic mountain trail, circling the entire slope of Corna Trentapassi. Upon reaching another junction, follow the deviation to the right (CAI 205), starting the ascent along the southern slope with a series of steep hairpin turns on rocky ground. Although technically not difficult, the slope requires attention and a moderate pace.

Once past the tree line, a wonderful view of the lake opens up, which will accompany the hiker all the way to the summit. Along the climb, you will find a detour leading to the cross of the eastern summit, an option recommended for those still with energy: it’s a short detour that takes about ten minutes and brings you back to the main trail. A few more steps and you’ll reach the summit of Corna Trentapassi, where there is a large metal cross, a small table, and a summit logbook.

After a well-deserved break at the summit – perhaps to enjoy the sunset – you can return by retracing the trail. Alternatively, there is the option to do a small loop, taking an unnumbered trail that branches off just before the steep ascent and descends through the forest, reconnecting with the CAI 229, without passing through the pass again.

Tredici Piante – Il balcone panoramico sopra l’abitato di Zone

If you're looking for a simple yet highly panoramic hike around Lake Iseo, the ascent to Tredici Piante from Zone is a great choice. While not particularly short, the route is mostly along a comfortable mule track, alternating between paved and dirt sections with a steady incline, making it suitable for everyone.

The journey starts from the cemetery of Zone, where you immediately take the mountain road marked as CAI 294. The trail winds through gentle hairpin turns in the woods, reaching a small church and then, shortly after, Passo Croce di Zone. From here, you turn right, following the CAI 207 trail, which continues on a wide, well-marked path.

Itinerari in primavera sul lago d’Iseo - Tredici Piante
Itinerari in primavera sul lago d’Iseo – Tredici Piante

If you consult a map, you will notice several shortcuts cutting more steeply through the woods. Although I haven’t personally taken these, they could be an option for those seeking a greater challenge. Here, however, we will focus on the main route.

Continuing along, you reach a wide clearing, which in spring transforms into a colorful flower carpet, animated by the wind and the presence of grazing animals. Our destination, clearly visible on the right, is reached by following the trail that first turns left, passing near Malga Aguina. From here, the view opens up magnificently over the last section of the lake and the Orobie peaks.

Continuing along the CAI 207 trail, the path climbs gently with hairpin turns until reaching a picnic area, equipped with cooking stations. By now, the summit is close: it is easily recognized by a wooden fence that marks it and the thirteen large trees forming a circle around an old, unused hunting cabin.

Once at the top, you can relax in the shade of the trees for a refreshing picnic, or lie down in the surrounding meadows, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the middle part of Lake Iseo and the characteristic outline of Mont'Isola.

For the return, you can retrace your steps along the same trail or, alternatively, continue along the CAI 230 trail, then turn right and return to Zone by following the Gnomes Trail (CAI 234). In this last option, a map is strongly recommended, as several trails intersect in the area, making it easy to take the wrong direction.

Monte Colombina – Bellissima vista sopra l’altopiano di Bossico

One of the most scenic trails around Lake Iseo, the ascent to the Monte Colombina cross is an unmissable experience. You start from the village of Bossico, initially walking through a dense forest before emerging onto gentle green hills, dotted with small houses and farms. As you ascend, the panorama gradually opens up to the lake, and soon the imposing silhouette of Monte Colombina, our final destination, becomes visible in the distance.

After reaching the wide picnic area near the church of the Fallen, the trail continues up a steep, paved mule track that, in about 40 minutes, leads to San Fermo. Here, you’ll find a charming church, a pond, a covered picnic area, and a small agriturismo, making it an ideal place for a refreshing break.

lago d’Iseo primavera - Monte Colombina
lago d’Iseo primavera – Monte Colombina

But the most challenging part of the hike is yet to come: you take the CAI 554 trail, then turn left onto 554A, which climbs steeply toward the summit. The last stretch is the most demanding, but also the most spectacular: as you gain altitude, the view opens up to a breathtaking panorama that encompasses the upper Lake Iseo, the unmistakable shape of Monte Isola, the majestic Corna Trentapassi, and, in the distance, the snow-capped peak of Monte Guglielmo.

Reaching the large summit cross, the view extends to the north, revealing the peaks of the Orobie: Presolana, Monte Pora, and Pizzo Arera. The area around the cross is small, but the ridge still offers enough space to sit, relax, and perhaps enjoy a picnic with a view, waiting for the sunset, which from this spot provides an unforgettable spectacle.

For the return, you can retrace the same path or, for those who want variety, you can complete the hike as a loop, following the CAI 552 trail (which I have not personally tested).

Bogn di Zorzino e San Defendente – Una baia isolata con immensi faraglioni di roccia

A trail I only recently discovered, but one that absolutely deserves to be hiked, is the route connecting the scenic Bogn Bay (Bogn di Zorzino) to the panoramic spot where the church of San Defendente stands.

You start from the Zorzino hamlet, taking a short unnumbered path at the end of via Castello that leads down to the coast. Here, the landscape changes suddenly: the narrow natural inlet is characterized by imposing rocky sea stacks that rise from the lush vegetation, creating a setting that resembles more tropical exotic bays than the shores of an alpine lake.

The path continues descending to the provincial road, which must be crossed to proceed along the coast. This area is particularly popular in the summer for its beaches, crystal-clear waters, and unique panorama, offering unforgettable views of the lake. After passing this beautiful natural amphitheater, the trail returns to the road for a few meters before turning right onto a steep trail heading north, toward the ridges that close the northern part of the lake.

Escursioni lago d’iseo in primavera - Baia del Bogn di Zorzino
Escursioni lago d’iseo in primavera – Baia del Bogn di Zorzino

Here, the trail becomes more challenging: a series of tight hairpin turns provide stunning views of the bay below, before entering the forest again and continuing the ascent on natural rock steps. Upon reaching the intersection with the CAI 565 trail, you turn left and stay at the hillside, then ascend right along the CAI 565C. Even in this second part, the slope remains steep, but the effort is richly rewarded when, emerging from the woods, you reach the meadow area where the church of San Defendente stands.

The open space around the church offers one of the best panoramic viewpoints on the lake, with a privileged view of the rocky wall of Corna Trentapassi and the entire northern part of the lake. There are also convenient picnic areas, perfect for a revitalizing break.

To return to Zorzino, retrace the CAI 565C trail and then continue along the CAI 565 back to the village, following the local roads back to the starting point.

After leaving your car near the cemetery, walk a few meters on asphalt before turning right onto a clearly marked dirt road that enters the forest. After a short stretch of gentle ascent, the trail becomes almost flat and, gradually immersing you in greenery, it leads in less than 20 minutes to the spacious panoramic spot where the church stands.

Croce di Predore e monte Bronzone – Ascesa su uno dei monti più iconici del lago d’Iseo

Among the most recognizable peaks dominating the plain south of Lake Iseo, Monte Bronzone stands out with its grassy summit, upon which a large bell is perched. Once you reach the top, you are free to ring it, making the destination even more special.

There are several trails leading to this magnificent natural balcony, offering breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding plain (some of these will be featured soon on the blog). One of the classic paths starts from the town of Viadanica. Here, after parking near the Alpini Chapel of Lerano, you begin to gently ascend along an asphalt road, which, with wide hairpin bends, leads to the base of Corno Buco. The first part of the route is fairly easy, and although there are some rest areas and parking spaces along the road, the road itself is quite narrow, so it’s better not to rush.

Once you reach the last dirt parking area, signs mark the entrance to the trail leading to Monte Bronzone. If you have a bit of extra time, you can take a short detour: simply turn right onto the CAI 708 trail, which in a few minutes loops around Corno Buco and leads to the large grassy plateau where the Croce di Predore stands. From here, you’ll have a spectacular view of the central section of Lake Iseo, surrounded by the main peaks of the Brescia region. This is also an ideal spot to watch the sunrise.

Returning to your original path, you can then take the trail that leads directly to the summit of Monte Bronzone (CAI 701). The trail goes through a beautiful forest, passing hairpin bends that gradually lead to the bare summit of the mountain. Once at the top, on clear days, the view opens up to the entire plain below, the Colli di San Fermo, Monte Guglielmo, the Torbiere, and a breathtaking panorama of the lake.
